I’m Moving…. 2wice

So we’ve decided to cut out of our apartment lease and move out at the end of the month. Some friends of ours have an empty 3 bedroom house not too far from where we work. And it’s less than a mile from their current house…. where we (and the dog) spend a majority of our time.

We collectively decided that paying them would be much better than paying “the man”, plus we could help them out financially. The place is much bigger… we’ll have a 2 car garage, storage, washer and dryer, and the dog will have a backyard to play in again.

Cost is cheaper (rent – he pays), but since we’ll have to pay water and garbage now (utilities – I pay) it pretty much comes out even. We will however have to pay an early termination fee to get out of our lease. This may eat my bonus instead of going to CC debt. Stay tuned.

In other news, I will be moving the blog off of the free Wordpress.com to a “self-hosted” Wordpress site. Dreamhost gives Wordpress users a great deal $7.95/month for a terabyte of space if you pay a year in advance. Their space is also WebDav accessible, which means it basically acts as an Internet Hard Drive. A very great utility for offsite backups, online storage, etc.

This is a great alternative for anybody that was looking at the $499 Apple 1TB Time Capsule – which included Wireless and a 1TB Harddrive. This is an offsite version – much better for your iPhoto library if your house floods or sets on fire.

Stay tuned for my new blog – it will be getting a new Theme and a total site redesign. I have a lot of projects going on right now, so it may be slow going, but it will happen. Probably by the end of the month.

dot Mac discount $59.88 – maybe I’m not “too cheap”

As many of you know, I have recently fallen in love with Macs. The “It Just Works” mantra is really true. It allows me to easily do the things I’ve been buying PCs to do over the years (but never actually did them.)That’s why I’m re-thinking the whole idea of not buying a .Mac subscription. Especially since Amazon.com sells them for $69.99 (No tax) and Free Shipping.  Found a cheaper price: $59.88 thru MacWorld Price Grabber.

  • Sure – I can use Picasa Web Albums instead of .Mac. Picassa even has a nifty iPhoto Uploader. But it’s not as well integrated as .Mac.
  • I will probably continue to use my Gmail account for mail – though I may switch the configuration to IMAP on my Crackberry. (Currently I’m using the web version of Gmail which doesn’t allow me to email stupid pictures I take with my phone.)
  • Bookmarks sync can be done thru the Google Toolbar, but only if you’re on Internet Explorer or Firefox. As much as I have tried to use Firefox for both PC and Mac – I really like my Safari. And Safari has a PC version too.
  • iDisk can be replaced by a FREE 1GB version of Box.net (an  online WebDav server). Dreamhost offers a killer 500GB WebDav server too, for $7 a month – a service I will probably look at instead of buying a $400 TimeCapsule.) The benefits are offsite backup instead of on-site. I really want my Pictures and Files backed up off-site (not as much for my iTunes collection). However, now that we’re starting to look at alternative lifestyles where we live on a boat for 3 days a week, I want to make these things readily accessible to my MacBook if necessary.
  • I also like the idea of a web gallery of videos that works seamlessly w/ .Mac. I would love to show off the videos I made for my mom and my best friend for Christmas. This can be done for free via YouTube too, though I don’t really want it that public.
  • Bac to My Mac – another valuable feature that can be nabbed w/ a Dynamic DNS subscription plus some complicated config. The cost? $25 a year. I would certainly love to be able to login to my home Mac Mini right now – would love to see how big my iPhoto album really is. This will be a key player in deciding whether the 10GB .Mac subscription is sufficient enough for me.

In all – now that I’ve found the $40 discount thru PriceGrabber, I’m wondering what’s holding me back. The $60 version you can buy every year so that you’ll never have to pay the $99 version – ever. Like everyone else in this PF blogsphere, I want to make sure whatever I bring into my house, I’m going to really get good usage out of. It’s yet another thing to manage in my life, and I need to make sure the benefits far outweigh the inconvenience.$59.88 / 12 = $4.99 a month. Yeah – pending my iPhoto library will fit in there, I think I’m going to go for it.

Another Bill Eliminated

I have canceled my $10/month Usenet account since I have discovered BitTorrent. Not only is it easier to use, but it is free and has more content than my old Usenet group. That’s $120 per year back in my pocket. (I wonder if I can snowflake the whole $120 at once or if I should do it monthly?) This also fits in well with my new mantra – KISS Keep It Simple Stupid. The more stuff (or subscriptions, or whatever – we have – the more we have to maintain. This takes otherwise valuable time away from doing what we really want to do with our free time instead of maintaining our crap!  I think that’s why I like the USAA Home Deposit service so much. Scan deposits in from home. In your underwear. Instant funds availability. What’s not to love? No more waiting in line. Looking for deposit slips – being pissed off that the guy infront of you used the last envelope. I sure wish more banks offered this service. It is phenomenal. Especially if you have a great great grandfather (or other distant relative) who was an officer in the military – beg borrow or steal to get yourself an account. It is the single best thing I’ve ever done for my financial life. And for my financial sanity. I only wish I had found it much earlier! In other news, I am actually thinking of trading this expense in for a $99 per year .Mac account. I know I said I didn’t want to pay for it earlier – but I’m finding it useful more and more. And it works very well with the mantra – Keep It Simple Stupid since it’s such a “Set It and Forget It” application. For now I’m still holding out for Google’s GDrive application.

New Airport Express coming on Tuesday!

Hi Everyone! You will be pleased to know that yesterday I purchased a refurbished Apple Airtunes Express wireless router from the Apple Online Store yesterday. (With my debit card too. A very good feeling.) Anyway, according to my Fedex Tracking number, it should arrive at my house in Phoenix on Tuesday. This router will replace my current D-Link Wireless Router and D Link Wireless Print Hub. Both of which I still have boxes for and will subsequently be sold on E-Bay.This adapter will also alow me to stream iTunes to my stereo – which is quite a treat with my music collection on my Mac Mini. This is all part of the simplification process for the Simplify My Life Project. I am replacing 2 devices with one – recouping my investment on E-Bay, and getting rid of more “crap” sitting around my house. There’s a brilliant writer named Richard Koch who wrote a book on “The 80/20 principle.” The foundation being that we use 20% of our stuff 80% of the time. 20% of our efforts provide 80% of the returns, etc. The more and more I acquire, and the more and more responsibilities I have, the more and more I am finding just how true this really is.I want to spend less time managing my stuff and more time enjoying it. Technology is supposed to make our lives easier. If you spend more time working for your things than them working for you, there’s some serious re-evaluating to be done. Which brings me back to my original comment…. Go Apple!

Leopard for FREE!

Breaking news folks! Less than 5 minutes ago I just found a Mac OSX Leopard CD sitting around our office unused. A quick chat with the IT guy and he said I can have it. And I quote “We just throw those things away anyway.” It’s an OEM disk for the numerous MacBook Pro laptops they just deployed on Monday. I – have been looking for Leopard for about 2 months now for my Mac Mini @ Home. I have it installed on my work MacBook Pro and can just not say enough good things about it. Unfortunately my Mini is the one hooked up to my 24″ monitor and it made me sad that the big screen didn’t have the Happy Leopard on it.No more! My flight arrives home @ 5:00PM on Friday. At 6:15 – me, my sweetie, and the puppy are hiking up the mountain next to our house. After that – I’m loading Leopard baby!Happy Valentine’s Day to me! I have a teddy bear and a red heart baloon on my desk, but the big present is the FREE Moac OSX Leopard!
